In South
Tynside there are seven staff members who will help you with your
education and one admin worker.
They
are qualified teachers or mentors who take a special interest
in the education of children who are looked after.
It's their job to make sure that:
• You
get the best out of school
• You get the help you need with school work
• You are advised about what should happen if things
go wrong for you at school
• You get encouragement to help you do better at
school and praise you when you are successful
• You get any extra support you need
• You are encouraged to attend school, as this is really
important if you want to do well
• They are involved in the decisions about choosing the
school which will suit you best
• They help you settle into a new school environment
My
name is Michael Bettencourt and I am the Manager of The PLACE.
I get to go to lots of boring meetings and write reports. I also
make sure that the team is working hard for you. My job is to
make sure you get the best out of your education. I try to make
sure that you get the same chance as everyone else. I am a trained
teacher and try to work with students as much as I can. If you
want any help with your education then get in touch.
My
name is Bob. I am one of the project mentors at the PLACE and
have been since the start of the project. Before I worked at the
PLACE I worked in the residential children's units for 11 years.
Everyday in the job is different so it is difficult to pick out
the best bits. One thing that that still stands out was our very
first celebration of achievement event. It was a very emotional
night and yes, before you say anything I did cry!!
Hi,
I'm Barbara. I've been project worker here since May 2002, before
that I worked at Fostering and before that I was a social worker.
At school I loved English and Art (probably because I really liked
the teachers). I always wanted to go to Art College and become
an artist or photographer. So follow your dreams or you could
end up a social worker too!!
Hi!
I'm Vicky and although I'm the teacher here at the PLACE I never
give detentions and I don't shout at kids. I make sure that everyone
I work with has a laugh and a bit of fun whilst getting help with
school stuff. I can help you with any of your school subjects,
coursework, homework, projects, revision, whatever you like really...
I'm
Sarah and have been a project worker since January 2004. I live
in Newcastle and am 'black and white' through and through!! At
school I liked math's but PE was definitely my favorite lesson.
Hi,
I’m Aaron and I’m a Project Mentor here at The PLACE
- the musical one! I’ve been playing guitar since I was
ten and am currently learning the saxophone. When I’m not
at work I can usually be found either gigging with one of my bands
or in attendance at a local busker’s night, quietly sipping
half a shandy in the corner.
My favourite subject at school was English Language, which I went
on to do at A Level and then on to a Linguistics degree at university.
I then studied for a year to become a primary school teacher,
but took a late career change, worked in a junior school for a
year and then somehow ended up here with this bunch…
My name’s
Helen and I work here as a Project Mentor. When I was at school
I liked Science and Maths (weird, I know), I wasn’t very
good at PE or Art and all of my school reports say “Helen
would do much better if she stopped talking to her friends during
lessons”. I’ve only been here a few months and, so
far, I’ve really enjoyed getting to know lots of young people,
listening to them talk about school and what worries them and
often, how well they’ve done. When I’m not at work
I like to go horse-riding and I’m a leader for the Girl
Guides.
I'm
Joanne and I run the office here at The PLACE and am responsible
for sending out everyone's PEP's, which is a huge job!
