Children With Disabilities Team

Social Services have special teams for all types of disability.

Who do we help?
Children and young people who are disabled have all the same stresses and strains which affect other children, as well as those which may stem directly from them being disabled.

Sometimes being disabled makes it difficult for children and young people to make friends. A child who is disabled may need extra help to explore as many opportunities and experiences as possible.

There is a specialist team of social workers based in Jarrow Town Hall who work with both the Health and Education Services to provide a co-ordinated service to meet the needs of families and disabled children.

What sort of help do they offer?
Every disabled child and their families may need help from time to time.  The Social Services Department offers advice and support to meet the needs of each child and their family.

The services which might be available are:
Family support work
Talking with other agencies like the Benefits Agency.
Speaking or writing on behalf of a child or family.
Support, advice and counselling.
Home Care.
Special equipment and home adaptions.
Specialist childminding, special provision in playgroup and playschemes.

Social Services can also offer Respite Care.  This could be a sitting service where someone comes into your home to look after you when your parents or carers need to go out; it could be overnight or weekend stays or other short breaks away.  Shared care can also be provided by foster carers on a regular basis.

All requests for advice or services go through our Refferral and assessment Team.
